Dr. Markus Horn joins the library to talk about the latest science and research taking place at the Sanford Underground Research Facility.
As the deepest underground laboratory in the United States, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, hosts world-leading experiments in physics, geology, biology, and engineering. How did this state-of-the-art science facility come to be in South Dakota? What are researchers hoping to discover? And why do scientists need to go deep underground in the first place? This presentation will explore all of these questions and more!
Dr. Markus Horn has been a research scientist with SURF since 2016. Dr. Horn has worked with experiments searching for the Universe’s “missing matter” in underground facilities in France, the United Kingdom, and the United States for more than 15 years. Originally from Germany, his academic career took him to London, Oxford, Yale, and Berkeley, before he came to work at SURF.
